Clio and PracticePanther are the two most compared practice management platforms for small and mid-size law firms. Clio is the market leader, with more than 150,000 legal professionals on the platform and the largest integration ecosystem in the category. PracticePanther, owned by Paradigm and founded in 2012, is the challenger with fully published pricing and a reputation for ease of use. Both do the same core job: matters, time, billing, payments, documents, and client communication.

The comparison comes down to a few real differences: pricing transparency, payments, document automation depth, and how each platform scales as your firm grows. This guide goes through each one.

Pricing

This is the sharpest difference between the two platforms, and the one most buyers feel first.

Clio publishes a single number: plans start at $49 per user per month. The four tiers are Starter, Core, Signature, and Elite. Everything above the entry tier is sold on a quote. Clio also sells add-ons, including Clio Grow for client intake and CRM, Clio for Personal Injury, and AI features under the Clio Work brand. Third-party sources cite a wide range of figures for the higher tiers, which reflects monthly versus annual billing, regional differences, and stale data. The practical answer: above Starter, a quote from Clio is the only reliable price.

PracticePanther publishes all four tiers. Solo is $49 per user per month billed annually ($59 month-to-month). Essential is $69 billed annually ($79 month-to-month). Business is $89 billed annually ($99 month-to-month). Business Pro is $114 billed annually ($124 month-to-month). Data migration and live training are included at no additional cost, which several competitors quote separately.

For a buyer who wants to know the price before booking a demo, PracticePanther wins clearly. For a firm that plans to negotiate an enterprise-style agreement and values Clio's scale, the quote process is normal. The honest advice: get written Clio quotes that include implementation, onboarding, and payment processing rates, then compare against PracticePanther's published tiers.

Billing, Payments, and Trust Accounting

Both platforms cover the core financial workflow: time and expense tracking, invoicing, online payments, and trust accounting with a trust ledger and reconciliation.

Payments. Clio Payments is powered by LawPay, the dominant legal payment processor, vetted by all 50 state bars. PracticePanther runs PantherPayments natively. Both handle cards and eChecks. Compare the processing rates on your quote, not the marketing page.

Billing features. PracticePanther's Business tier includes UTBMS coding and LEDES billing, automated payment reminders, and recurring payment plans. Its Business Pro tier adds full accounting functionality: trust accounting, operating accounting, enhanced reconciliation, and GL, AR, and expense management. Clio covers accounting through integrations with QuickBooks Online and Xero.

Trust accounting. Both platforms offer trust account ledgers and reconciliation. Neither replaces your bookkeeper. If your state bar has specific IOLTA reporting rules, verify them on the demo, whichever platform you pick.

Document Automation

Both platforms offer document templates. Neither leads the category here: that distinction belongs to Smokeball and LEAP, which build document assembly into their core.

Clio offers document automation with custom fields, advancing through the tiers: deeper automation comes with the Signature and Elite tiers. PracticePanther offers document templates on the Solo plan with more advanced workflow features, including task and event workflows, as you move up. Firms whose daily work is producing documents should evaluate Smokeball or LEAP alongside these two.

Client Communication

PracticePanther has a genuine edge here. Its Business tier includes native two-way text messaging, intake forms, and native eSignature. Texting is how clients actually communicate, and having it built in rather than integrated through a third party matters for small firms without IT staff.

Clio offers a secure client portal and integrates with texting and communication tools through its app ecosystem. The portal works well, but the messaging depth is not native in the same way.

Integrations and Ecosystem

This is where Clio's scale shows. Clio lists more than 200 integrations, including Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, NetDocuments, Dropbox, QuickBooks, Xero, and Zoom. If your firm already runs a stack of tools, Clio is the most likely to connect to all of them.

PracticePanther integrates with the core productivity tools, Dropbox, Box, QuickBooks Online, and offers Zapier and API access on the Business tier. The catalog is smaller, and the API sits behind the Business plan rather than the entry tiers.

Firms that need a deep or unusual integration list should start with Clio. Firms with a standard stack will not feel the difference.

Ease of Use and Support

Both platforms score well with reviewers. On Capterra, Clio holds 4.7 out of 5 across roughly 1,700 reviews, and PracticePanther holds 4.7 out of 5 across roughly 530 reviews. Ease of use scores are 4.6 for Clio and 4.7 for PracticePanther; customer service scores are 4.7 for both.

PracticePanther is consistently described as the easier product to adopt, and its included live training and data migration smooth the onboarding. Clio's included live training sits in the higher tiers, and its breadth of features takes longer to learn. For a solo firm with no ops staff, the simpler onboarding has real value.

The Verdict

Choose PracticePanther if: you are a solo or small firm that wants published pricing, native texting and eSignature, free data migration, and the shortest path from signup to billing clients. It is the simpler product with fewer surprises on the invoice.

Choose Clio if: your firm runs a stack of tools that must integrate, you expect to grow into advanced reporting and automation, or you value the market leader's ecosystem, training content, and third-party community. Budget time for a sales process to get real numbers.

Look at a third option if: document assembly is your main workflow (LEAP, Smokeball), client texting volume is your top priority (8am MyCase), or your practice is litigation-heavy with deadline-driven case phases (Filevine).

FAQ

Is PracticePanther cheaper than Clio? At the entry tier, no: both start at $49 per user per month. The difference is transparency. PracticePanther publishes every tier up to $114; Clio publishes only the entry price and quotes the rest.

Can I switch from Clio to PracticePanther or vice versa? Yes, both platforms offer migration assistance, and PracticePanther advertises free data migration. Budget for a transition period either way, and export a full backup before you start.

Which has better billing features? Both cover time tracking, invoicing, online payments, and trust accounting. PracticePanther's Business tier adds UTBMS coding and LEDES billing natively, and Business Pro adds full accounting. Clio handles accounting through QuickBooks and Xero integrations.

Does Clio include client intake? Clio Grow, the intake and CRM product, is an add-on, not part of Clio Manage. PracticePanther includes intake forms on its Business tier.

Do either offer an affiliate program I should know about? Clio runs a customer referral program ($250 gift card for referring a firm that subscribes), not a public affiliate program. PracticePanther runs a public affiliate program (10% commission on first-year fees for annual-plan referrals at the entry tier, via lead registration in their referral portal). CounselStack intends to apply to PracticePanther's program but has not been accepted, and this comparison is unpaid. Neither program affects our rankings.
